We are thrilled and honored to announce our recent project for South Cobb High School has received first place honors from the 2019 Build Georgia Awards. This distinction is presented by the Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC), in recognition of construction excellence for projects that demonstrate the utmost in safety, dedication, innovation, scheduling and service.
In 2016, our team designed a new performing arts center for the Austell, Georgia high school. Cobb County School District wanted to raise the school’s capacity for its fine arts program. The new 32,000 sq ft building consists of a 750-seat auditorium and supporting spaces that include instructional units, a black box theater, and a dance studio.
“We are so proud to have been part of this partnership with Cobb County School District. At CDH, we believe it is our purpose to improve lives through design. With this new facility, we have created something that will leave a lasting mark on South Cobb High School’s campus, one that is a celebration of the fine arts and of the students themselves.”
— Melissa Cantrell, Principal and head of CDH’s Education + Research Studio
The performing arts center provides state-of-the-art rehearsal and performance space, as well as a gallery-style lobby to showcase the visual arts. When designing this project, our overarching goal was to facilitate learning and growth for the school’s fine arts students and create a place that the entire student body would appreciate and admire.
With this project, the county sought to install a stand-out, modern building, one that could mark the entryway to the school and embody the pride of their community. With the glass façade and canted columns, the facility projects a striking street view.
Our design team worked with general contractor Nix-Fowler Constructors to bring this project to life. Our seasoned professionals, when confronted with construction challenges, executed a creative use of building materials to keep the project within budget. Together, our work has equipped students with everything they need for success. We are proud to share the honor of this award with our collaborators, and hope that our work makes a positive impact on each student at South Cobb High School.
The AGC will announce all of the Build Georgia Awards winners at the annual conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina this June. The projects will also be published as part of a construction-focused supplement in the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
